Operation Barkhane and Boko Haram French counterterrorism and military cooperation in the Sahel

By Christopher Griffin

In late 2014 and 2015, France began showing signs of military involvement in the war against Boko Haram in Nigeria. On 4 February, Le Figaro reported that French planes were carrying out reconnaissance missions on the Nigerian border on behalf of Chad, Niger and Cameroon. French President François Hollande, however, ruled out any direct French military engagement as well as any overflights of Nigerian territory.[1]
