The West’s war in Afghanistan from 2001-2014 is rich in lessons for any state or coalition of states that is intervening in a conflict in support of a host state and against an insurgency. In this respect, there are important lessons that are applicable, for example, for the Saudi-led coalition intervening in the Yemeni Civil War. This paper focuses on the campaign conducted by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) against the Taliban and in support of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (GIRoA) from 2006-2014. The paper begins by reviewing the situation leading up to 2006, which was of a country ravaged by decades of war.
